How to put MIDI music on your web page

Requirements

The Digital Hymnal can be best experienced with the following:

Screen Size - This site looks best at a screen resolution of 800x600.

Sound output - To hear the music, you'll need speakers, a sound card and a browser that supports MIDI files. For a better sound quality, you might use any of the following:
Wavetable sound card - We recommend the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live, Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold or the Ensoniq AudioPCI.
Sound Module - We recommend the Roland JV-1010 for GM orchestrations and the Kurzweil MicroPiano for piano or organ arrangements.
Keyboard - We recommend the Korg Trinity, N and X series of music workstations and the Roland XP series
Digital Piano - We recommend the Yamaha P-series or the Kurzweil PC88-MX performance controller.

Software
Browser - This site is optimized for Netscape Navigator 4, however you can use Navigator 3 or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4. If you have Internet Explorer 3, you can use it but you have to disable ActiveX.  Older browsers may not support MIDI files, Frames, or JavaScript. If yours doesn't, click here to get Netscape Navigator (free).
If you would like to try an alternative browser, take a look at Opera, it works fine and doesn't take much space on your hard drive.
Music Software - We recommend Cakewalk Professional or Cakewalk Home Studio for MIDI editing (and transposing) and printing (for Windows) and Performer or Opcode's Vision (for Macs).
Shareware - Here are some free good programs:
Music Sculptor
- Very easy to use MIDI sequencer with music keyboard window. Record, edit, and play music. Use with either external MIDI keyboard or music keyboard window which can be played using mouse or computer keyboard.
Jazz 3.0  - A full size free midi sequencer for Windows95. Includes play, record, quantize, transpose, graphical edit (of pitch, velocity, modulation, controllers), mixer window (slider control of volume, pan, chorus, reverb), and more.
Mozart 3.0 - Music Processor for Windows. Using only the computer keyboard, you can create and edit sheet music. This can be printed with high-quality TrueType symbols on printers supported by Windows, and appears on the screen in standard notation as a WYSIWYG display. The primary objective of MOZART is to print parts for musicians, but MIDI files can be exported to provide an "aural preview" on multimedia PCs.
MusicEase - Intelligent music notation editor with MIDI input and output.
NoteWorthy Composer - Music composition and notation processor for Windows. It allows you to create, record, edit, print, and play back your own musical scores.
GoldWave - is a comprehensive digital audio editor, ideal for people who work with audio for CD editing, archive restoration, speech analysis, radio and TV, Java and Web pages, games, or just for fun. You can use it to make everything from elaborate answering machine messages to professional, high quality CD audio content.
