Contributions
At this point, Digital
Hymnal is in a formative stage, so your contributions would be greatly
appreciated. You can contribute with MIDI files, lyrics, and brief historical notes about
the authors and composers. Although we give preference to MIDI files of the hymns still
missing, you can also upload different styles or
arrangements of the hymns already online.
The MIDI files of the Digital
Hymnal (Digital Hymns) should conform to the General MIDI (GM) specifications. In GM, each
instrument, or voice is assigned a specific number, so a piano sound is always a piano
sound no matter what type of sound card or synthesizer it is played on.
Digital Hymns can be arranged in eight different styles:
Piano, Organ, Piano&Organ, Four Voices, Strings, Band, Orchestra, or Alternative. Here
is a brief description:
- Piano - This is a pianistic arrangement of
the hymn. While not a virtuosic display, it should provide a basic accompaniment of the
hymn, emphasizing whenever possible, the melody. It should follow the same harmony and
rhythm as in the SDA Hymnal, and should include an introduction and all
the stanzas of the hymn. The piano sound should be assigned to the first track on channel
1 and the file name should have the format: dh###pn.mid, where ### is the number of the
hymn. See dh073pn.mid
- Organ - The organ arrangement should be
based on the same harmony of the hymn in the SDA Hymnal. It could be assigned to a single
track or it can include different registers and a pedal section assigned to different
tracks in the MIDI file. It should include an introduction and all the
stanzas of the hymn. The file name should have the format: dh###og.mid, where ### is the
number of the hymn.
- Piano&Organ - This arrangement should
follow the previous guidelines for piano and organ. It should include an introduction and all
the stanzas of the hymn. The file name should have the format: dh###po.mid, where ### is
the number of the hymn. See dh001po.mid
- Four voices - This arrangement is based
strictly on the four voices of the hymn in the SDA Hymnal. Each voice should be assigned a
different track, all on MIDI channel 1, starting with soprano in the first track,
alto in the second, and so on. All tracks should be quantized. You can use piano, organ, voice, or
other proper sound for the voices. There's no need to include an introduction, nor all
stanzas; one stanza is enough. The file name should have the format: dh###fv.mid, where
### is the number of the hymn. See dh001fv.mid
- Strings - This is an arrangement for
strings or string quartet. The parts can be in different tracks and different MIDI
channels. It should include an introduction and all the stanzas of the hymn. The file name
should have the format: dh###st.mid, where ### is the number of the hymn. See dh461st.mid
- Band - This is an arrangement for band. It
can include the brass, woodwind, and percussion sections, or some other instruments. It
should include an introduction and all the stanzas of the hymn. The file name should have
the format: dh###bd.mid, where ### is the number of the hymn. See dh614bd.mid
- Orchestra - This is an orchestral
arrangement of the hymn. It should include a strings section and may include brass,
woodwind, percussion, piano, organ, etc., assigned to different tracks and MIDI channels.
It should include an introduction and all the stanzas of the hymn (preferably). The file
name should have the format: dh###or.mid, where ### is the number of the hymn. See dh001or.mid and dh086or.mid
- Alternative - This
style is for arrangements that don't meet the requirements of any of the previous styles.
Here you can use your creativity, free of any restrictions. Just take into consideration
that the goal is to provide accompaniment for the hymns. The file name should have the
format: dh###al.mid, where ### is the number of the hymn. See dh163al.mid
and dh191al.mid
- Piano Stylings - This
style is for pure enjoyment of piano arrangements. It could be an original arrangement or some other taken from a published book.
The file name should have the format: dh###pa.mid, where ### is the number of the hymn. See dh163al.mid
and dh191al.mid
